Garrett's House is dedicated to the support, advice, and education of a genetic skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa or EB for short. Currently there is no cure or effective treatment for EB. Please take a moment to learn about EB, and how you can support others who struggle with EB everyday. Garrett's House also honors the memory of those who lost their brave fight against EB. Please check out the Garden of Angel to learn more about the precious butterfly angels.

Garrett's Story

In Loving Memory....................

Hello everyone my name is Garrett. I was born on December 6, 2004 at 12:32pm and became an EB angel on December 18, 2004 at 8:12pm. I was born with a genetic skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) Simplex Dowling Meara. Normally the simplex form of EB is not fatal, but I contracted two infections while in the hospital, Pseudomonas and MRSA. They entered into my blood stream and I became septic. It also caused my lungs to fill with fluid and one collapsed. I died of heart and respiratory failure when I was just 12 days old.

My mommy has EB too.

I also have 3 sisters, Sami, Summer and Grace.  Sami has EB too.  You can read her story here.  I also have another sibling here in Heaven with me, Jesse.  We love to run around and play together chasing butterflies and my other friends.

Please visit my friends and me in the Garden of Angels where EB Angel’s will be remembered forever!

Below is a summary of what my family does each year on my birthday.

5 years later

This year as a hard one.  5 years just seems so long ago.  I didn't work as usual and we just spent the day around the house.  In the evening we had spaghetti for dinner and then made a gingerbread village this year!  Everyone got to make a part of the village so there was very little fighting about who go to do what:)  After, we had cheesecake and the girls got to open their present from Garrett.

I think part of the reason this year was harder is because Summer is 4 and she looked a lot like Garrett when she was born so I often wonder if that's how he would look today.  I also have friends who had a baby around the same time Garrett was born and their children turned 5 as well and are getting ready to start school.  We should be doing the same thing!  Just a difficult and emotional day all around.

4 years later

Much to my surprise this was the best birthday in the past four year.  Maybe it was because we were busy  most of the day and didn't have time to think about it.  Sami's Daisy Scout troop was in our city's Christmas parade, so we were busy in the morning with that.  Did some things around the house in the afternoon and then had take-out for dinner (no one felt like cooking).  I took the day and night off from work, so it was nice to have a Saturday night off for once!

We built a house this year out of Rice Krispie's instead of gingerbread!  It was easier and more fun.  Garrett "sent" Sami the game Candyland (she wanted to know how he knew she always wanted that game! LOL). Summer got Dora and Diego hot wheels cars and Grace got a new teething toy.  They enjoyed make the house and eating it as well.

12/6/2007: The Gingerbread Train...

We decided to build a gingerbread train this year instead of a house; just something different.  The girls had a good time helping, or more like making a messy and eating frosting and candy!  We had spaghetti for dinner (Sami’s favorite) and after wards make the train, ate cheesecake and opened the gift’s Garrett ‘sent’ from Heaven for the girls.  Sami got a Cinderella Tea Set and Summer got a little tractor, wagon, farmer and animal play set.

Before I go any further, I want to warn you that this post is going to be heartbreakingly honest and you probably will need Kleenex by the time you are done.

But anyways, his birthday was a good day.  We had planned to go see the shuttle launch, but the launch was delayed.  I have yet to see on go up since living here in Florida (we are only an hour from the coast).  So maybe some day I’ll see one launch!

Thank you to those who sent letter, emails and messages on the 6th and the 18th.  I made it a rule last year not to answer emails or phone calls on those days and to wait till after the 18th to talk about the days.  Mostly to keep those days how WE want them, not how other people want them to be for us.  So that is why no one has heard from me till now.

Garrett was with us for 12 days so it would seem like those 12 days would be like the 12 days of Christmas.  And in a way there were, when he was alive, but now they aren’t so happy.  As soon as his Birthday comes around, we know that in 12 days his Angel day will be here.  I have to be honest as and say this year was the hardest year yet, even harder than the first year.  This year is all seemed more real.  There were lots of babies born around the same time Garrett was and now they are all turning 3…  I had Joe get one of the tubs in the attic down that had his clothes in it to find a ‘First Christmas Outfit’ for Grace and when I opened the tub, right on top were some of Garrett’s clothes…the tags still attached.  Just another reminder than he never got to wear them and he never will.  After the girls went to bed that night we opened the cards and gifts family and friends sent in memory of Garrett.  Almost all of them mention he would have been 3 and to see it in writing made it all seem the more real and so much more sad and heartbreaking.

We really didn’t do much on his Angel day.  Sami still doesn’t get the concept of death, so it’s just easier for now if we don’t talk about it too much.  Maybe when the girls are older we’ll do something more.  But right now it’s just a reminder of what was and what will never be.  Another reminder that it’s been 3 years since I have seen or spoken to my mother and a couple of other people in my life who walked away and never looked back after Garrett died; another reminder than if it wasn’t for Garrett’s death, Summer and Grace wouldn’t be here today.  We probably would have had another child, but it wouldn’t be Summer or Grace.  I am thankful to have them and that they are healthy, but I’d take a dozen kids with EB just to have Garrett back again.

My mission I set out on after Garrett died, is still the same; to help the families of new EB babies when they come into this world and to help the families of EB Angels when they leave this world.  There have been lots of new babies in the past few years, and some angel’s as well.  I hope have been able to give some hope to some of those families and that I am able to continue doing that.

12/6/06- Two years later...

Hard to believe my little Angel would have been 2 years old today....How time flies.  This year we weren't able to do as many things as we did last year.  But it was still nice.  After Joe got home from work we had dinner and then made the gingerbread house.  Sami wanted to make the icing pink, so it was a pink house!  After dinner we decorated Garrett's little Christmas tree and Sami got to open a special present that Garrett 'sent' her from Heaven.

Garrett's Angel Day- 2 years later

We didn't really do too much today.  I think today was harder than it was last year or even two years ago.  I took the night off work.  During the day, the girls and I took Christmas Cookie's to Joe's office.  We just had dinner together and stayed in for the night.

A few people emailed to say they were thinking of us today.  But I was surprised at who didn't call/email.  Those that did email/call, I thank you.  It means so much to me that others

One year later.... 12/06/2005

They say as you get older, time goes by faster. Personally I think that's true. I am not sure what is sadder, that Garrett would have been 1-year old on the 6th, or the fact that he's been gone for a year now. Even now, there are times it seems like it all happened just yesterday, and there are times it seems like it was all dream.

This past year has been a roller coaster of sorts. A few months after Garrett's death, we discovered through medical records, that his death could have been prevent, had the doctors not made some of the decisions they made a few days prior. We have looked into legal action against the doctors involved, but sadly Florida law doesn't really provide much remedy for us. Yes Garrett has EB and that didn't help things, but he died from an infection he got in the hospital that anyone could get. It was treatable if the doctors had acted quickly enough. We also discovered they "failed" to tell us somethings about Garrett's condition on that last day. So his death was not solely caused by him having EB, but more so by the doctors mistakes.

In addition, Joe changed job this past year (for the better); Sami faced (and made it through) major spinal surgery (though the full outcome will not be known for year); I am currently going through a difficult pregnancy which makes the furture even more uncertain; we have grown closer to some friends and family, but at the same time "lost" some family and friends, one of which being my mother. I can understand people not knowing what to say, so they say nothing at all, but I'd never imagine my mom would be one for those people. We have also made some life long friends all because of what happened to Garrett. Most have lost children of their own, some even to EB.

Part of my wants to just get this "anniversary" over with and part of my wants it never wants this "anniversary" to arrive. This time of year is already eventful and emotional for us. Joe's birthday is December 9th. It is also our wedding anniversary. This year we celebrated our 5th year together. Which in itself is hard to believe!

Garrett's Birthday

We wanted to do something on Garrett's birthday each year to celebrate his life. So we took the day off from work, spent it together. First we took Sami to the park to fly a kite and play on the play ground.  Then we came home and  baked and decorated Christmas cookies and then we made a gingerbread house.  It is something I have never done, but always wanted to do.  That evening we had dinner together and decorated the Christmas tree. It will be something we can do every year no matter the weather or where we are living at the time.  That day went better than we expected.  And what meant the most, is that other remember it was Garrett's special day.  I received many emails from friends letting me know they remembered.  And that meant more than they'll ever know.

Garrett's Angel Day

A couple of years ago there was a little baby who lost her fight to EB.  I never met her or even spoke to her family, but she shared the same birthday as my mom, so I would always think of her on that day.  I emailed this little girls mom once (we have since become friends) and told her this very thing.  She was so happy and so grateful that I would always think of her little angel each year.  I never really understood how much that meant to her till I faced this same issue myself.  As Garrett's birthday and Angel Day (the date of his death) came closer, I wasn't scared of those days specifically, but more scared that no one else would remember.  I was scared that amongst everyone's busy lives that those days would come and go and no one would remember.  But people did remember.  They remembered both days.  I did cry a lot that day, but I did have some comfort knowing others were grieving that day for Garrett too.

Butterfly Stories

In Memory of Anthony Lee Postell Jr,
as told by his Grandmother,
Taunya M. Mendes

"His father and I went to the cemetary to choose his site along with the funeral director who is a friend of my families. We were not sure what to look for or were but when the cemetary rep. brought us to babyland both of us were scared then she finally pointed out the site were he could be laid to rest and with tears in his fathers eyes all of the sudden a huge gush of wind blew and we looked over and saw a butterfly and his father Anthony Sr., said this is it, he has let me know that this is the site and that is were my grandbaby has been laid to rest.

Well, we laid him to peace and my daughter was grieving hard and we all started getting very concerned about her mental and health well being. I finally got her to eat and talk a bit and she said to me "Mom if I only knew he was ok, I could rest a bit easier". Well after that she walked out to her car and called me saying so happy "Ma a white butterfly just followed me to my car and he is still flying around me", my reply was that is the answer you were waiting for Sophia that he is ok.  Every time she went outside of my house for days that white butterfly came back and I actually seen it for myself and was amazed. Never seen a white butterfly in my life and thought it might have been a moth but nope it was truly a butterfly. I Have faith and then my daughter prayed and has done a bit better since that day.

Well, for the first time the other day before fathers day both his parents and myself along with the cemetary rep. went to go visit him so we could also sign off on his marker blue print (which is a big bronze butterfly & vase) and they both started crying and I started praying because I knew the kids heart was braking all over again and I asked Jesus (which in front of babyland and his site is a big statue of Jesus and to baby angels ) to please give them a sign that he is ok again. Then out of know where came a big beautiful Orange and black butterfly that flew down on the flowers the kids had laid on their babies site and they looked at me with the same tears in the eyes along with relief. I again said have faith because he hears you and will not let you down.

God is good and his only son Jesus is truly there with us always. I believe in angels and think they can come to us in many different forms here on earth such as babies or butterflies. If someone did not believe they would after hearing this story about our family."

In Memory of Garrett James Denslaw, as told by his mother, Sara Denslaw

"Even though Christmas 2005 wasn't technically the first Christmas with out Garrett, I still considered it to be.We lost his so close to Christmas the previous year, that Christmas didn't really feel like Christmas that year.

But in 2005, after Sami had gone to bed and 'Santa' had come, I went out into our garage to check on some laundry that was in the dryer. As I was coming back into the house, something in the light caught my eye.  I turned to see what it was and flying near the ceiling was a butterfly! My first thought was how could a butterfly have gotten into the garage so late at night and in the middle of December for that matter? But then it hit me, Garrett had come home for Christmas.

Day to Day Care

Day-to-Day care of a baby with EB

This will be an ongoing list as I think of other things to add or if you are the parent of an EB child and have something you want to ad, please email me and I'd be happy to add it to the list!

Holding your child

It is best not to pick an EB baby up under the arms as it could cause blistering. It is better to gently roll them from side to side onto your arms. Or many families have found great success carrying their baby around on a standard bed pillow, egg crate foam or memory foam. It is soft and allows you to hold your child w/o accidentally hurting them.

Feeding your child

Some EB babies tend to take a very long time to eat only eat small amounts at a time.
The Heaberman Feeder/Special Needs Feeder is a good bottle to try as babies do not have to suck as hard to get the formula. Others have had good luck with the Playtex drop-in bottles. You can squirt the formula into their mouth if need be.

Dressing your child

Some EB babies can wear clothes, others can not. 100% soft cotton seems to work the best. Avoid zippers, rough fabric, and rough seams. Many make their own clothes out of soft cotton, or line clothes with silk or stain. Some families have found success with the material used to make bath suits. It allows the skin to breath yet, reduces the friction at the same time.

Other recommended brands:

Kicky Pants (made of soft Bamboo Fabric)

Hannah Andersen

Bathing your child

Some just done sponge baths, other do full baths in the bath tub. Some take all the bandages off first, others soak them off, and others will bath them with the bandages on and then remove and re-dress on limb at a time. You use the sink or bath tub with towels for the baby to lay/sit on. Others have used small inflatable bath rubs which are softer than the regular tub and easy to clean afterward. Bath Sponges are ok but they can harbor a lot of bacteria in them even if you rinse them out. It is recommended that if you use a bath sponge to replace it frequently.

Hands

I get a lot of questions about what do to about the hands. Some wrap, some do not, some just use gloves. Its best to do whatever works for your child, but I will tell you the one thing NOT to do is to wrap the entire hand up in a ball like a boxing gloves. Not matter what form your have, having the hand and fingers in the same position all the time increase the risk for the fingers to web and contract. It can also cause range of motion issues in the wrists. I know first hand how difficult it is to individual wrap small infant fingers, but I know in the long run you will be glad you did. Other have also wrapped at night and left the hands out or in gloves during the day or even just unwrapped for a few hours a day to allow the child to move their fingers and develop fine motor skills.

Wounds on the face, ears and head

Those are the hardest to deal with because they can not be easily wrapped. For blisters many have found to lance the blister and apply a small around of antibiotic ointment until it closes and then apply whatever moisturizer you use till it has healed up. Some head wounds can be wrapped if the wound is large, but many babies will not leave the wrap on.

Teething

When it comes to teething, EB babies are really no different than babies w/o EB. They drool a lot, they are crabby and in pain. Some things other EB parents have found that worked for their child:

~Getting a soft cloth wet, putting it in the freezer till its stiff and then let the child chew on it.

~Other have used frozen carrots, or frozen bagels.

~Tylenol

~Hyland Teething tablets. They dissolve very quickly and seem to work. You can find them at Walgrees, Target, Walmart and probably other pharmacies as well.

~Personally I have found Oragel to taste yucky and it does burn when applied to a open wound or blister, (even the tiniest one). But everyone Is different and it never hurts to try something at least once because you will never know if it might work!

Solid Foods

Introducing solid foods is up to you. Some babies like them, others do not. It really depends on the child and how involved their mouth/throat is if at all. Some have found rice cereal to be too rough on the throat and have had better luck with Baby Oatmeal. The spoons with the rubber covering are good as opposed to the metal ones.

The fun things siblings bring home from school

If you have older children in school or attend daycare, chances are they bring home a lot of cold and viruses. And chances are it gets passed around the house. It tends to get a little more serious when you have an EB baby in the house, as they have a weekend immune system and can pick up bugs quite easily. RSV (an upper respiratory infection) can be very serious, even fatal in an EB baby who already has airway issues.

Some tips on keeping germs at bay

When your older children get home, make these the first 2 things they do,

1) WASH THEIR HANDS and

2) change out of their school clothes.

Germs can come in on hands, clothes, back packs, etc… Adults and children can even bring home a cold or virus and not become sick themselves.

If there is sickness in the house, try to keep those sick away from the child with EB, which is know is much easier said then done. Wear a mask (like doctors and nurses do) if you are sick yourself. Hopefully it will prevent the baby from getting sick. Lysol EVERYTHING you can in the house. It is still possible your baby will get sick even if you do everything you possibly can to keep them well, which leads me to the next section.

What to do if your baby gets sick

Well that can be tricky sometimes. If they have a stuffy nose suctioning it out can cause damage to the inside of their nose and airway. You can use saline drops to loosen up the mucus and hopefully they will sneeze it out. You can also use a cool mist vaporizer near the baby to help keep moisture in the air. Keep the baby in an upright position to help them breath better. Keep an eye on their temperature. When in doubt, call your doctor especially if the baby seems to be getting worse, is having trouble breathing or stops eating because they are having trouble breathing and eating at the same time. Coughing may irritate the throat and they could cough up a little bit of blood. As along as it is a small amount mixed in with the mucus, you probably do not need to worry, but if they continue to cough up bright red blood without mucus, call the doctor right away because it may be some more serious.

EB babies (and children) can get dehydrates within a matter of hours due to their fluid loss through the blisters. And when they are sick they may drink less. Its important to keep track of what they take in and you can even keep track of what they put. Get a small food scale from the store; weight a dry diaper and then subtract that weight from the wet one and that will give you how many ounces they are putting out. Call your doctor and find out how much your baby needs to drink just to stay hydrated. It maybe different than they number of ounces they need to take in each day to grow and heal. It is a good idea to write down each feeding because by the end of the day you may have forgotten how much they drank up to that point. If they go more than one day without getting as much as they should, or they start to show signs of dehydration, call your doctor right away. You baby may need IV fluids till they are feeling better.

Any of these signs could indicate that your baby is dehydrated or is becoming dehydrated:

~ More than six hours without a wet diaper
~ Urine that looks darker in his/her diaper and smells stronger than usual
~ Lethargy (sleeps a lot, hard to wake, body is floppy when you hold them)
~ A dry, parched mouth and lips
~ No tears while crying

Signs that your baby may be seriously dehydrated:

~ Sunken eyes
~ Hands and feet that feel cold and look splotchy
~ Excessive sleepiness or fussiness
~ Sunken fontanels (the soft spots on your baby's head)

Also if you baby suddenly develops a fever or their temperature drops below 97 degrees call the doctor right away or head to the nearest emergency room. Dehydration can cause terrible complications, even death.

Emergency Kit

It is a good idea to keep a small bag in the car(s) or by the front door with extra bandages, Mepitac tape, extra diapers your child wear (as the hospital may not have the kind your baby is able to wear) and extra bottle (if they use a special one) the names and phone numbers of all your babies doctors, medical history/records if you have them and anything else that your baby uses or needs that you might not be able to ‘run out and get’ if you were to end up in the hospital suddenly.

Also somewhere on their car seat place a label with a brief description of EB, names and numbers of their doctors and emergency contact names and numbers in case you were to get into a car accident were not able to tell the EMT’s about EB. You can also put something similar into the diaper bag, your purse, etc…
